We have been a few times to the Portland Hotel and we have always enjoyed our stay it is in a very good location for getting to various places in Buxton with facilities to park your car. It has a bar with a good selection of drinks and also serves tea and coffee which is nice when you return from an evening out, The breakfasts are always very good and the staff are very helpful.

Very poor hotel and I certainly would not recommend to anyone else. The room was poorly furnished and dirty. Pubic hair on the tablecloth at breakfast! We booked 2 nights and left after 1. We would not have stayed even one night if we had not arrived so late (10.30 pm) after a long drive from Reading with nowhere else to go. A disasterous weekend which was very disappointing. You should not be supporting hotels like this.

The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff at reception.

The breakfast was not quite up to the standard of the rest of the hotel, E.G. the fried eggs and bacon were overcooked, or perhaps they been left standing for a time. (May be we should have got up a bit earlier!) But the sausage, mushrooms anf blackpudding seemed to have been freshly cooked.

    Near centre

Noisy plumbing, mattress slightly sloping, dingy central lighting

Friendly and helpful staff. Clean but basic bedroom. Nice breakfast. Near to the centre and countryside.Comfortable and nicely presented rooms on the ground floor, eg breakfast room and sitting rooms. Has a nice 'french flair' to it.

My single room was located at the front on the first floor above the main road near to a controlled pedestrian crossing. Very noisy lorries (aggregate) would `thunder by' particularly noticeable in the early morning, probably going to/from the quarry that is situated in the nearby countryside. Floors creaked badly and the first floor decor was really tired looking.

The service was excellent. We could come and go to suit us and the rooms were comfortable. Breakfast was superb. Buxton and surrounding countryside beautiful.

    cozy bar
    comfortable bed
    delicious breakfast

    Totally recommend for a holiday

Comfortable bed, clean room, with a cozy bar/lounge area perfect, and the breakfast included was particularly delicious with a good variety to choose from.

Could not be improved in any way without adding further information.

    Staff very friendly. Convenient location.

Room poorly decorated with humidity stains on ceiling / walls and wallpaper coming off. Very basic bathroom with no amenities Noisy! Accoustic insulation is non-existent and doors / water systems are very old, so there is constant noise.

The only thing we liked was the location. The breakfast was good.

The room was badly in need of a good dust and polish, there were no comfortable chairs to sit on. There were bulbs missing in the light fittings and one light fitting with a bulb did not work. The bed was extremely uncomfortable . In the bathroom there was a cracked washbasin ,a broken lid on the cistern and an extractor fan that sounded like a sherman tank. Also the shower curtain was not attached properly. I felt that we got a poor return for the price we had paid.

Central location and the staff were very pleasant. Breakfast was very good.

The hotel is in need of major refurbishment. Security was very poor. We were disappointed that the restaurant was closed for evening meals, but understandable as there were very few guests, consequently very little 'atmosphere' .
